Historic Lupton City began when members of the Lupton and Frierson families created the Dixie Mercerizing Company and built a yarn spinning mill in 1919, followed by construction of ''company homes'' beginning in 1920 through circa 1935, as well as other amenities to complete a self-contained mill town. (post office, ball field, gymnasium, school, etc.). Dixie sold off the company-built bungalows for private ownership in the 1950s, and changed its name to Dixie Yarns in 1965. The mill ceased operations in 2009. The Lupton City post office closed in 2006 and zip code 37351 now enjoys mail delivered by a contract letter carrier on foot.
